As the holiday season approached, I couldn’t resist the allure of Switzerland’s winter wonderland, with its charming cities and magical Christmas celebrations. It’s been six years since my last visit in the Autumn season and I enjoyed a completely different experience. Join me as I take you on a virtual and culinary tour of Zurich, Zermatt, Interlaken, and Lucerne, where I immersed myself in the beauty and delights of the season.
Switzerland conjures up images of Heidi, the Alps, and fine chocolate, but it’s so much more than this. On my recent trip to this pristine and diverse country, I discovered another side of Switzerland and just what a winter wonderland it truly is. Enjoying the opulence, natural wonders, and rich cultural tapestry that Switzerland has to offer.
My travels were during Winter and the first falls of snow had just started in early December. The thick layers of snow added to the magical picture-perfect landscape images that seemed unreal. At every turn was another photo opportunity, the biggest problem was the continued lack of storage of my photo which forced me to choose my clicks carefully.
Welcome to Zurich, a city that seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. Discover the captivating mix of old and new as you explore the cobblestone streets of the old town and admire the sleek architecture of the city’s modern buildings.
From the moment I stepped foot in Zurich, I was greeted by a city adorned with twinkling lights and the aroma of mulled wine. The Christmas markets beckoned, offering a delightful array of handcrafted gifts and mouthwatering treats. As I wandered through the cobblestone streets, the festive spirit enveloped me, and I couldn’t help but be captivated by the enchanting atmosphere. Switzerland is a destination with strong sustainability values – Swissstainable and runs like clockwork!
Don’t miss the enchanting red children’s Fairytale tram only (which only runs in Winter), offering a whimsical journey through Zurich’s landmarks. Indulge your sweet tooth at Teuscher Chocolate shop and take a Lindt Factory tour for an immersive chocolate tour and experience making your very own personalised bar of fine chocolate.
For a delightful culinary experience, we dined at Chez Fritz by the lake. Enjoying a refreshing fennel and citrus salad followed by pan-fried salmon with lentils, accompanied by a glass of local white wine.
Discover the epitome of luxury at Baur au Lac, Zurich’s most renowned 5-star hotel boasting just 119 rooms. During the Christmas season, the hotel transforms into a magical wonderland with exquisite decorations, a charming Gingerbread house, and a cozy Chalet for guests to enjoy. Indulge in a delightful High Tea experience in the Salon or treat yourself to a glass of champagne at the bar. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample their exclusive BonVin Sion (champagne) Petite Arvine, available at their cellar doors scattered throughout the town.
For art enthusiasts, a visit to The Art Gallery of Zurich is a must. We were captivated by the Giacometti Sculptor exhibition and mesmerized by the LED light installation by Pipilotti Rist, titled “Pixel wald Turicum” (Pixel Forest Turicum). Immerse yourself in the world of art and let your senses be inspired.
During my stay in Zurich, I enjoyed the centrally located Seidenhof boutique hotel, just a short walk from the train station. The hotel offered a great breakfast with a full buffet and excellent hot chocolate. For dinner, I had a memorable experience at the Christmas Village Fondue Chalet, indulging in delicious cheese fondue. Another evening, I dined at Zeughauskeller, a large restaurant resembling a German beer house, where I savored traditional dishes like schnitzels and venison. The portions were generous, so sharing is recommended. Zurich’s culinary scene offers a diverse range of flavors and experiences.

Next, I found myself in Zermatt, a fairytale ski village and gateway to a mountain playground. The sight of the iconic Matterhorn took my breath away, its peak glistening in the winter sun. I embraced the thrill of skiing down powdery slopes, feeling the exhilaration of the crisp mountain air. This is an experience I can help you plan and enjoy. As the day drew to a close, I cozied up in a charming chalet, savoring the warmth and tranquility of this alpine retreat.
Traveling through Switzerland with the Swiss Travel Pass allowed me to fully appreciate the beauty of the country and enjoy unforgettable experiences along the way. With the convenience of the Swiss Travel Pass, you can enjoy the luxury of having your luggage transferred to your next hotel, allowing you to travel hassle-free without suitcases in tow. During my trip, I took advantage of this service, and it made my journey much more enjoyable. Allowing me to sit back, relax, and let the scenic train rides and immersive attractions take me on a remarkable journey.
One of the scenic trains I experienced was on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, a 40-minute ride from Visp to Zermatt. The picturesque views along the way were simply breathtaking, showcasing the natural beauty of the Swiss landscape.
Another memorable train ride was on the Gornergrat Bahn, which took me to the top of the Observatory. The panoramic vistas from this vantage point were truly awe-inspiring, offering a stunning perspective of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
While in Zermatt, I also had the opportunity to visit Zooom, where I immersed myself in a captivating Matterhorn experience. It was a fantastic way to learn more about the history and significance of this iconic mountain and perfect when the weather isn’t great.
Where to stay – The Mont Cervin Palace, a 5-star hotel located in the heart of Zermatt’s main street, offers luxurious amenities including an amazing pool and in-house ski hire store.
Where I stayed – Hotel Cervo, a 5-star hip hotel with a prime location and breathtaking views of the Matterhorn from my room. The breakfast was exceptional, featuring a starter ‘power shot’ and a choice between a mixed buffet and small portioned a la carte options, allowing guests to sample multiple hot dishes. The hotel also boasts an outdoor Japanese-inspired onsen, sauna, and many other amenities.
Other Hotels – Additional options in Zermatt include Hotel Daniela and 22 Summits, both offering their own unique charm and amenities for a comfortable stay.
For a memorable dining experience, we enjoyed dinner in the private dining room at Cervo, where we indulged in a chef’s menu featuring a delightful selection of antipasti, followed by a trio of homemade pasta dishes and finishing with a trio of deserts. The wine was a delicious local red Lux Vina Syrah. The flavors and presentation were truly exceptional, leaving us satisfied and impressed.
On another evening, we dined at the main restaurant, Bazaar, which perfectly matched its Middle Eastern-inspired décor and food choices. The menu showcased a fusion of flavors and spices, creating a culinary journey that delighted our taste buds. The ambiance of the restaurant added to the overall dining experience, making it a truly memorable evening.

In Interlaken, adventure awaits at every turn. From snowshoeing through pristine forests to exploring the stunning natural beauty, thrilling winter activities abound. The adrenaline rush is invigorating, and amidst all the excitement, Interlaken offers a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. You can embark on these exciting adventures and discover the true essence of winter in Switzerland. Interlaken, nestled between lakes, is a relaxed village with easy access to the surrounding Alps.

During my stay, I stayed at the well-located Carlton Europe, a family-owned 4-star hotel. Breakfast at the hotel included freshly baked bread, pastries, cold meats, cheese, and fruits. It was a satisfying start to the day, fuelling me for the adventures that awaited in this picturesque destination.
When visiting Jungfrau, be sure to take the breathtaking train ride to the “Top of Europe” and marvel at the stunning panoramic views from the Jungfraujoch. Additionally, explore the enchanting Ice Palace, where you can wander through intricate ice sculptures and tunnels carved into the glacier and take a seat in an ice throne!
For an unforgettable dining experience in Interlaken, I highly recommend the Hotel Interlaken. Their restaurant offers incredible dishes that are reminiscent of Michelin-star quality. I had the pleasure of enjoying the deer served with red cabbage and chestnuts, a truly delightful combination of flavors. Another exceptional dining option is Ristorante e Pizza Sapori at the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa. This Italian restaurant goes beyond expectations, boasting actual Michelin-starred status. From delectable antipasti with fritto misto to grilled Gamberoni with risotto, every dish was a culinary masterpiece that left me in awe. These dining experiences in Interlaken are sure to satisfy even the most discerning palates.
Finally, I arrived in Lucerne, where the magic of Christmas came alive in the form of enchanting markets. The air was filled with the melodies of Christmas, and the stalls were adorned with handcrafted treasures and local winter delights. I indulged in delectable Swiss chocolates and sipped on steaming cups of mulled wine, immersing myself in the joyous ambiance that only the holiday season can bring.
Lucerne, a city steeped in tradition and history, exudes a friendly and easy-going vibe. During my stay, I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Wilden Mann, a traditional 500-year-old hotel with charming rooms. Centrally located yet quiet, it provided me with the best night’s sleep of my journey.
Exploring the city, I enjoyed a city tour, admiring the iconic bridge and wandering through the old town. For a delightful experience, I enjoyed a lunch cruise on Lake Lucerne, taking in the picturesque views. A visit to the Museum of Transport is also highly recommended, offering fascinating insights into Switzerland’s transportation history. Lucerne truly offers a blend of history, beauty, and relaxation for an unforgettable experience.
During my visit to Lucerne, I had the opportunity to inspect the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Inspired by the stunning Swiss landscape and the vibrant colors of the Mediterranean, the hotel’s tranquil rooms and suites exude a sense of warmth, comfort, and exclusivity. The design perfectly blends the beauty of both regions, creating a truly luxurious and inviting atmosphere for guests to enjoy.
For an easy dinner option in Lucerne, I recommend Tibets, a vegetarian restaurant conveniently located in the railway station. With its easy self-serve concept, it offers a convenient and delicious meal option, especially for those exploring the nearby Christmas markets and transportation hubs. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting Christmas markets and experience the festive Village parade. To add a touch of magic to your evening, consider taking a boat ride back, allowing you to admire the beautiful scenery and create lasting memories.
Embark on a thrilling day trip to Mt. Titlis, where adventure and natural beauty await. Explore the mesmerizing Glacier Cave, a frozen wonderland carved into the glacier. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the mountain, savoring the panoramic views. Afterward, take a visit to the charming village of Engelberg, immersing yourself in its picturesque streets and embracing the tranquil atmosphere. A day trip to Titlis and Engelberg promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
During my time in Switzerland, I also had the pleasure of enjoying Winterzauber im Holzhüttli a delightful winter event that takes place in Lucerne. Translated as “Winter Magic in the Wooden Hut,” it offers a charming and cozy experience for visitors. The event typically features traditional wooden huts set up in a picturesque location, creating a festive atmosphere. indulging in a cozy and traditional dining experience by enjoying fondue in a charming chalet by the lake. With a crackling fire pit and a cauldron of warm “Glühwein”, also referred to as mulled wine, is a cherished tradition in the country often served hot and is enjoyed during the colder months, particularly during festive events and Christmas markets and delighting in the warm and gooey cheese, accompanied by the breathtaking views of the lake, creating a truly memorable evening in Lucerne.
