Do People Still Use Travel Agents? Dispelling the Myth

Do People Still Use Travel Agents? Dispelling the Myth

Travel Agent, Travel Consultant, Travel Advisor…whichever you’d prefer to call us,  many people think we are heading the way of the dinosaurs. Whenever I meet new people and tell them what I do, I often get asked “Do people even still use travel agents?”

The travel landscape has evolved dramatically in the digital age. With an overwhelming number of booking platforms, apps, and review sites, it’s easier than ever to plan a trip online—or so it seems. Despite the prevalence of DIY travel options, the role of travel agents remains not only relevant but increasingly valued by travellers seeking seamless, tailored, and stress-free experiences.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Do people still use travel agents?”, the answer is a resounding yes.

Here’s why.

The Reality of Modern Travel Planning

In today’s fast-paced world, convenience often dictates our choices. Online platforms allow you to search, compare, and book flights, accommodation, and activities in minutes (or even seconds!). Yet the sheer volume of options can quickly lead to overwhelm.

While it might seem easy to book your own holiday, the reality often involves:

  • Uncertainty: Am I booking the right flight connections? Is this hotel as good as it looks online? Will one room fit my whole family?
  • Excessive time spent: Researching destinations, comparing reviews, and organising logistics can eat up hours, even days. Although researching is half the fun of booking your holiday (plus it helps build excitement), all of the options can sometimes be too overwhelming, and you’ll spend more time than you need to.
  • The risk of missing out: Without insider knowledge, you might overlook hidden gems, exclusive experiences, or cost-saving opportunities. You may also be forced into booking something you didn’t really want (or need!), all because the website was trying to get you to book by creating a sense or urgency (“last room left”,  “20 other people are looking at this property”…etc)

Now, let’s look at why working with a travel advisor can make all the difference.

1. Expertise and Personalised Recommendations

When you book online, you’re working with algorithms designed to upsell. When you work with a travel advisor, you’re benefitting from real-life expertise and a genuine desire to create the best experience for you.

As a travel advisor, I bring:

  • First-hand experience: I’ve travelled extensively and understand the nuances of destinations—whether it’s the best time to visit, the must-see attractions, or the hidden gems off the beaten path. Plus, if I haven’t be to, or know about a certain location, I have a community of other travel advisors I can talk to who have.
  • A tailored approach: I get to know you, your preferences, and your priorities. Are you a foodie? A thrill-seeker? Travelling with kids? I curate every detail to fit your style, and don’t push you into buying something you don’t want, or need.
  • Insider tips: From recommending the perfect Parisian café to advising on cultural norms in Japan, I help you feel like a local wherever you go.

2. Time-Saving Convenience

Researching and planning a holiday can be is a full-time job. There’s so much to consider: flights, accommodation, transport, activities, insurance, visas, and more. Even for the most organised traveller, it can become very overwhelming, very quickly.

When you work with a travel advisor:

  • We handle all the logistics so you can focus on the excitement of your trip.
  • We ensure every detail is covered, from airport transfers to entry requirements, airline seating and meals to must-do activities and sights.
  • We use our knowledge and industry connections to streamline the process, saving you hours of research and eliminating guesswork.

Planning travel should be fun and exciting—not stressful. Letting a professional take care of the finer details means you can look forward to your journey with peace of mind.

3. Exclusive Access to Perks and Deals

One of the biggest misconceptions about travel advisors is that we cost more than booking online. The truth? Working with a travel advisor often provides better value for your money.

Here’s how:

  • Industry connections: I have access to exclusive deals, discounts, and packages not available to the general public. Some wholesalers/suppliers will only deal with agents, and not the general public. Want to stay up-to-date with my current offers? Sign up for my newsletter here
  • Added value: I can secure perks like complimentary breakfasts, room upgrades, early check-ins, and late check-outs that you won’t find online, and all for the same price (or less) than what you can see.
  • Tailored recommendations: By understanding your needs, I can find ways to save money while enhancing your overall experience—whether it’s bundling services or advising you of off-peak options.

Rather than just booking a trip, I help you maximise your travel investment.

4. Support When You Need It Most

Travel disruptions are an unfortunate reality. Flight delays, cancellations, and unexpected hiccups can turn an exciting journey into a stressful experience. Unfortunately, there seems to be more of this happening now than ever before. When you book online, you’re left to navigate these issues on your own, and even if you can get through to the airline/hotel/website that you booked through, you may be on hold for hours!

With a travel advisor in your corner:

  • You’re never alone: I’m here to provide support before, during, and after your trip. I can be contacted through a variety of options (phone, email, chat etc)
  • Quick solutions: If something goes wrong, I step in to handle rebookings, refunds, or alternative arrangements, sometimes before you may even be aware that there is an issue.
  • Advocacy: I work directly with airlines, hotels, and tour operators to resolve issues on your behalf. I also have access to trace contacts who can escalate an issue where needed.

Having a professional to rely on means you can relax, knowing that any challenges will be handled swiftly and efficiently.

5. Stress-Free Peace of Mind

The biggest advantage of using a travel advisor? The peace of mind that comes from knowing every detail has been carefully considered. You don’t have to worry about missing a connection, navigating foreign customs, or whether the hotel will meet your expectations.

I take the time to:

  • Triple-check your itinerary for accuracy.
  • Provide clear, personalised advice.
  • Anticipate potential challenges and offer proactive solutions.

Travelling should be a joy, not a chore. By entrusting your plans to an experienced professional, you can focus on what truly matters: creating memories and enjoying the journey.
