Family cruising: A Guide to Memorable Adventures
Cruising has long been celebrated as a luxurious and convenient way to explore the world. But when it comes to family holidays, its allure shines even brighter. As someone who has embarked on over 10 cruises with my twin girls and husband, starting when they were just 2 years old, I can attest firsthand to the joys and practicalities of family cruising. It’s not just a holiday; it’s an immersive experience that caters to every member of the family, from toddlers to adults. Here are some insights and tips based on our family cruising adventures:
Why Choose Cruising for Family Holidays?
One of the most compelling reasons to opt for a cruise with your family is the convenience it offers. Imagine unpacking once and waking up each day to a new destination without the hassle of airports or long road trips. This seamless travel experience allows you to spend more quality time together exploring ports of call and enjoying onboard activities.
Cruise ships are essentially floating resorts, equipped with a plethora of amenities to cater to every age group. From water parks and supervised kids’ clubs to spa facilities and specialty dining options, there’s something to entertain and indulge everyone. This variety ensures that even the youngest travelers, like my twins when they were toddlers, are engaged and entertained throughout the journey.
Tips for a Successful Family Cruise
- Choose the Right Cruise Line: Not all cruise lines are created equal when it comes to family cruising. Family-friendly cruise lines that offer dedicated kids’ programs, family accommodations, and onboard activities suitable for all ages. I can highly recommend Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and of course Disney Cruise Line for the young and young at heart.
- Planning: While spontaneity has its charm, planning is key to ensuring a smooth sailing experience with kids. Research shore excursions that are suitable for families, pre-book dining reservations, and check out the onboard entertainment schedule in advance.
- Pack Wisely: Pack essentials such as sunscreen, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, and any medications your family may need. Many cruise ships have laundry facilities or offer laundry services, so you can pack lighter.
- Set a Budget: Cruising can be all-inclusive, but there are additional costs such as gratuities, shore excursions, and specialty dining. Set a budget for extras and plan accordingly to avoid unexpected expenses.
- Safety First: Establish meeting points in case your family gets separated onboard and make sure kids know to approach staff members for help.
- Balance Activities: While it’s tempting to immerse yourself in all the onboard fun, don’t forget to carve out quiet moments for relaxation and bonding as a family. Balancing activities ensures that everyone gets the most out of the cruise experience.
- Respect Ship Etiquette: Teach children basic ship etiquette, such as using indoor voices in public areas, respecting other passengers’ space, and adhering to dress codes for dining venues.
Our Favorite Family Memories
Reflecting on our family cruising adventures, some of our fondest memories include holding a baby sloth in Columbia, snorkelling in crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and enjoying Christmas, New Years Eve and Halloween onboard. These shared experiences not only created lasting memories but also strengthened our family bond.
Whether you’re embarking on your first cruise with kids or planning your next adventure at sea, remember that cruising offers a unique blend of relaxation, exploration, and entertainment for all ages. With careful planning and a spirit of adventure, your family cruise can be the holiday of a lifetime.
Cruising with family is more than just a holiday—it’s a gateway to new adventures and unforgettable moments with loved ones. Embrace the journey, savour the destinations, and cherish the time spent together onboard. Happy cruising!
Top Tips for Cruising with Kids:
- Prepare an Embarkation Day Bag: Pack essentials like swimwear, hats, medications, and any immediate needs. Sometimes, cabins aren’t ready until mid-afternoon, and luggage delivery can take time.
- Set Spending Limits: Check if the cruise line allows you to set daily spending limits on your kids’ cruise cards. This helps manage expenses, as excitement can lead to unplanned spending.
- Pack Swimming Gear: Bring goggles for the pool, as pool water can be harsh on eyes. Consider packing pool noodles for enjoyable snorkelling in clear waters.
- Personalize Your Cabin Door: Many cruise cabin doors are magnetic. Use magnets or decorations to easily identify your cabin among the many others.
- Use Magnetic Hooks: Bring magnetic hooks to keep your cabin organised. They’re handy for hanging lanyards, hats, bags, and more. Alternatively, an over-the-door organiser can also be useful.
- Bring Wet Bag for Swimwear: Have a plastic or wet bag for wet swimsuits. Kids love the pool and drying time is limited before debarkation.
- Pack a First Aid Kit: While ships have shops with medications, they may only stock adult versions. Pack a basic first aid kit with items like seasick tablets, antibiotics, antihistamines, Band-Aids, pain relievers, and a thermometer. Kids can fall ill and ship medical centres can be costly.
- Arrive a Day Early: Plan to arrive in the port city a day before your cruise. Flight delays or cancellations could cause you to miss the ship. Who needs that stress on holidays.
- Visit the Kids Club: On embarkation day, sign up your kids for the Kids club and get a program of activities for the cruise. That way they can select the activities they don’t want to miss, and they can meet staff and other young cruisers, ensuring they’re ready for fun.
- Consider a Stroller: If you have toddlers, bringing a stroller can be a lifesaver for exploring ports or navigating the ship. Some of the ships are huge and little legs get tired.
- Pack Familiar Snacks: Bring snacks from home that your kids enjoy. Kids don’t have to stick to the kids’ menu; cruise staff are accommodating if they want to try something off the main menu.
- Stay Flexible: Embrace the adventure and stay flexible with plans. Cruising with kids is about creating lasting memories together.
These tips should help you and your family make the most of your cruising experience, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for everyone on board. Happy sailing!
