Boredom, DVT, and sleep deprivation are just a part of some travellers experiences of long haul flights, so here are some tips to keep in mind when travelling.
1. Upgrade
Spend those frequent flyer points. Travelling in business is far less tedious than economy or premium economy. Even if you have to go out of your way on your frequent flyer carrier, it is worth the few extra flights.
2. Use the time
This is your time. No mobile phones ringing yet! Take some work to do with you. Take some great books and watch every movie you’ve ever wanted. It will help you get through a long haul flight.
3. Minimise carry on luggage
Carry on luggage will take up your stretching space and you don’t want to be more cramped than you have to. Its also often a good idea not to wait to board at the end as you can find that the cabin luggage compartments could all be full.
4. Bring your survival gear
Keep carry on limited but don’t forget the necessities you need to survive whatever they are for you – pyjamas, eye masks, IPODs and your own pillow.
5. Board relatively rested
A flight is not a great place to catch up on sleep. Plane sleep is no substitute for sleep in a comfortable bed. So have a great night’s sleep the night before. Don’t go out on the town and hope to sleep it off on the plane. This will be disasterous.
6. Consider sleeping tablets
If you want to use melatonin or other drugs or natural methods, try these before you use them on a flight. Everyone reacts differently and sometimes these drugs can act more as a stimulant.
7. Hydrate
Hydrate well the night before with electrolyte drinks. Don’t drink alcohol the night before the flight and avoid it on the flight. Avoid diuretics such as coffee, soft drinks and chocolate.
